Ynysybwl’s bid for a league and cup treble remains on after they overcame Talbot Green to reach the final of the Bernard Martin Cup. Trailing 3-2 at half-time, three unanswered second half goals took the Bwl through 5-3 on the day. In the other semi-final Church Village beat Caerphilly Athletic reserves 2-0 at Upper Boat. Adam Ganon with both goals for Church Village.
These results mean Ynysybwl and Church Village meet in both the final of the Greyhound and Bernard Martin cups. With Ynysybwl on the brink of clinching the TERV League title, Church Village are now realistically all that stands between Ynysybwl and a clean sweep of trophies.
There were no Premier Division fixtures last weekend but in Division One the biggest story was the withdrawal of Caerphilly Argyle from the league. Matches involving Argyle being expunged from the league record made some adjustments to how things stand near the top of division one. The net result was a strengthening of Caerphilly Athletic and Cilfynydd’s position as they lost just 3 points, whereas Trecenydd and Hopkinstown’s each lost six points from two victories over Argyle, putting them five points behind the league front-runners (although both have a game in hand over Cilfynydd).
The matches played in division one saw Aber Valley reserves and Pontypridd play out a goalless draw and Treforest reserves were 6-0 winners of Llantwit Fardre reserves, moving the White Tips outfit above neighbours Pontypridd into 5th.
There are midweek fixtures in both divisions. In the Premier there is a mid-table clash as Church Village host Llanbradach, while Rhydyfelin are at home to Tir-Y-Berth. A win for Rhydyfelin would help them in their pursuit of finishing 2nd but Tir-Y-Berth will be out to try and get something from their final game of the campaign as they risk finishing bottom.
In division one, leaders Caerphilly Athletic reserves can move clear of Cilfynydd if they avoid defeat at home to Treforest reserves. Caerphilly need a maximum 10 points from six matches to secure the league title. Hopkinstown will look to close the gap to Cilfynydd (who have no game) when they travel to Nelson Cavaliers reserves. Pontypridd host Aber Valley reserves.
