Ormson stars as Ponty edge past Graig in the cup

First Team, Match Report

Liam Ormson’s stunning free-kick was the difference as Pontypridd overcame Graig Reserves in the preliminary round of the Greyhound Cup at Trehafod Park.

The Black Sheep’s victory was soured, however, by a serious injury to Rhys Mumford. The wing-back sustained a double leg fracture and will face a long period on the sidelines.

After defeat in the league opener last Saturday, Ponty started well and it was Mumford who broke the deadlock with an early strike – his first goal for the club – after latching on to Tom Frowen’s pass. Huw Morgan doubled the lead before half-time with a composed finish.

Graig Reserves reduced the deficit early in the second-half before Ormson’s long-range strike restored the Black Sheep’s two-goal advantage. The Graig team did get another goal to force a tense finish but the visitors got through it to progress to the next round.
