Pontypridd AFC’s hopes of first ever silverware were dashed by a narrow Bernard Martin Cup final defeat to Talbot Green, who completed a TERV League and Cup double after their Premier Division success last month.
Following a poor league campaign, the Black Sheep turned their season around this month with a brilliant run to their maiden final. They hoped to make history against the newly crowned league champions.
However, Talbot’s Sam Hunt scored the only goal of the game after Ponty failed to clear a corner in the first half and in a tight game of very few clear cut chances, it proved to be enough for the side that also gained promotion to the South Wales Alliance League last weekend.
The final may be most remembered for interruptions to the game caused first by a lightning storm that caused the match officials to take the players off the field for ten minutes in the first half and the accompanying downpour that waterlogged the Dog Track pitch, which resulted in a 50 minute break between the end of the first half and the start of the second half.
