Kate Hughes’ first-half hat-trick helped Pontypridd AFC Ladies to an emphatic win on their club debut away to Penywaun in the South Wales Women’s League Group A.
Hughes was the history maker as the first female scorer for the club in competitive football and she followed that up with two more strikes before the interval to complete a well-taken poacher’s treble. It was no more than the Black Sheep deserved for a dominant first-half display that might have seen more goals but for some wayward finishing.
The newly formed Penywaun side showed determination in front of a vocal home crowd despite the half-time deficit and when Ponty started the second-half slowly, an own goal from Kate Ward gave the home side some hope. However, Ponty Ladies showed a ruthless touch and immediately scorched any possibility of a comeback through Brook Morgan’s close-range strike and Linsey Mochan’s solo effort.
Mochan added a second to cap an industrious display before fine finishes from Ria Jones and Rebecca Adams in the closing stages added a little extra shine to the perfect start to the season.
