Pontypridd AFC Women progressed into the next round of the SWWGL Alun Evans League Cup with a morale-boosting win away to Cardiff Wanderers.
Having won just two of their nine fixtures this season and commitment a problem this season, Ponty were massive underdogs against a side that are currently sitting fourth and unbeaten in SWWGL Division One. However, the Black Sheep put in their best performance of the season so far.
Oliva Enoch got Ponty started in the first half, combining well with Leah King to cut through the home defence like a knife through butter. Shortly after, Megan Voyle pounced on a defensive error to score into the top corner.
In the second-half, the Ponty onslaught continued with a fine individual effort from Kate Phillips, marauding down the wing and beating four defenders before scoring.
Rebecca Adams added the coup de grace with a sensational fourth goal that coach Simon White described as the “greatest goal I have ever witnessed at any level of football since I was running teams ragged with Ynysybwl in the 1960s”.
The women will hope this win can kick-start a frustrating start to the campaign and encourage better commitment across the squad.
