Pontypridd AFC Women started their South Wales Women’s League Division One campaign on the wrong with a defeat at Talgarth Town, finishing the game with 10 players.
Talgarth have been a familiar foe in the last two seasons and the previous four encounters have produced a win for each team and two draws. Any hopes of Ponty winning for the first time in the former asylum town were dashed early as they found themselves 2-0 down inside 15 minutes.
Manager Simon White’s assessment of how the team started the game was his own kind of mad poetry. The less repeated the better.
However, there is always hope when Kate Hughes is on the field and after re-joining the club in pre-season she showed she hadn’t lost any of her trademark fox in the box skills, finishing after Brook Morgan’s effort was saved.
Unfortunately, that proved to be the high point of Hughes’ afternoon. Let’s say frustration boiled over at some of the decisions being made and the striker was shown a red card near the hour mark.
Talgarth added a third goal that effectively killed the hopes of Ponty making a comeback with 10 players on the field.
