Tom Frowen came off the bench to star for Pontypridd AFC men’s first team as they advanced in the Greyhound Cup with victory away to Cascade YC Reserves.
Penybryn has fond memories for the Black Sheep, the scene of Ponty’s Bernard Martin Cup semi-final success against Cascade two and half years ago. After recent league defeats for both first and reserves teams, this win dispels those disappointments somewhat.
After a tight and goalless first half in which Ponty enjoyed most of the possession but created little open play opportunties, it was the introduction of Frowen for the second half that helped turn the tide. Geraint Lewis and Michael Clare had already been denied by excellent saves before midfielder Frowen broke the deadlock around the hour mark.
Frowen’s goal owed much to Jonny Hughes, whose excellent work down the left hand side created the scoring opportunity.
It could have gone pear-shaped for Ponty when another substitute, Levi Thomas, was sent off in the 65th minute for a challenge on a Cascade player. However, the visitors showed good resolve to ensure the momentum didn’t reverse.
Frowen added his second with 11 minutes to play, Callum Rendell claiming the assist. Then Frowen turned provider, playing through Lewis Roberts to score his first goal of the season. Rendell got the final act on the scoresheet, his deflected effort giving Ponty a handsome win.
Manager John Radnor was pleased with the win, especially showing great team spirit after the red card. He reminded the team to be more clinical as he felt a few more goals were left on the field.
Up next for the men’s first team is Talbot Green at home on Saturday; a chance to gain a first league win of the season.
